Papeete is the capital of French Polynesia, on the island of Tahiti in the South Pacific, in the southern hemisphere. It is the main city and gateway of these famous islands, a lively port and market town on the northwest coast of Tahiti, and the point through which almost all visitors arrive before travelling on to the more remote islands and atolls. From Papeete, flights and boats set out for the legendary islands of the region, from nearby Moorea to Bora Bora and beyond. The heart of the city is Le Marche, the colourful covered market, full of tropical flowers, fruit, vanilla, monoi oil and the black pearls for which Tahiti is famous. Papeete is reached by air through Faa'a International Airport, the only international airport in French Polynesia, just outside the city. The climate is warm and tropical all year, with a hotter, wetter season and a slightly cooler, drier one.
