Moorea lies just 17 kilometres from Tahiti in French Polynesia and is reached most easily by a ferry of about 30 to 45 minutes from Papeete, making it one of the most accessible of the islands of Tahiti. Often called Tahiti's sister island, it is a strikingly beautiful volcanic island in the Society group, shaped by two deep bays, Cook's Bay and Opunohu Bay, and ringed by a clear lagoon inside a protecting coral reef.
