Moorea lies just 17 kilometres from Tahiti in French Polynesia and is reached most easily by a ferry of about 30 to 45 minutes from Papeete, making it one of the most accessible of the islands of Tahiti. Often called Tahiti's sister island, it is a strikingly beautiful volcanic island in the Society group, shaped by two deep bays, Cook's Bay and Opunohu Bay, and ringed by a clear lagoon inside a protecting coral reef. Jagged green peaks such as Mount Rotui and the pierced mountain of Mou'a Puta rise above the water, offering superb viewpoints and hikes. The lagoon is ideal for snorkelling, diving, and boat trips among rays and reef fish. Moorea can also be reached by short flights from Tahiti. The tropical climate is warm year-round, with a drier season from about May to October and a warmer, wetter spell the rest of the year.
