Onotoa is a remote coral atoll in the southern Gilbert Islands of Kiribati, in the central Pacific Ocean, far from the capital at Tarawa. It is a classic low atoll, a thin ring of palm-covered islets around a lagoon, only just above the sea, with a small population living a traditional life of fishing and coconut cultivation. This is one of the more isolated and rarely visited corners of Kiribati, with no resorts or real tourism, of interest for its remoteness, traditional culture and pristine reef and lagoon rather than any developed attractions. Onotoa is reached only with difficulty, by infrequent small aircraft and by inter-island boats from Tarawa, so a visit needs time, planning and flexibility. The climate is tropical, hot and humid year-round, and the atoll is extremely low-lying and vulnerable to rising seas.
