OMD is Oranjemund, and the town behind the code carries one of southern Africa's strangest stories: built by De Beers in 1936 inside the Sperrgebiet diamond zone at the mouth of the Orange River, it spent eight decades as a sealed company town - permit-only, fenced, effectively invisible - until 14 October 2017, when it opened to the public for the first time in its history. What visitors find now is a surreal frontier: Namib dunes to the north, the Atlantic to the west, the Orange River delta to the south, and gemsbok (oryx) grazing the suburban lawns as if they own them - because in practice they do. The town is pivoting toward eco-tourism under its OMD 2030 banner, with birding in the river mouth wetlands and Sperrgebiet edge-lands as the draw. Access is by regional flight into the OMD airstrip or the long desert road via Rosh Pinah.
