OLK is the airport code for Fuerte Olimpo, the capital of the Alto Paraguay department and the northernmost departmental capital in Paraguay, set on the Paraguay River, which forms the border with Brazil. It is a small, remote town of a few thousand people in the Chaco, best known as a gateway to the Pantanal, the vast tropical wetland that stretches across the border and is one of the world's greatest wildlife habitats. Founded by Spain in 1792 as a river fort, Fuerte Olimpo still has an old hilltop fort and a strongly frontier, cattle-raising character. Because roads are limited, one of the main ways to reach it is by riverboat, such as the Aquidaban, which plies the Paraguay River between Concepcion and the far north. The climate is hot, reaching well over 40 degrees in summer, with milder winters.
