Nikunau is a small coral atoll in the southern Gilbert Islands of Kiribati, in the central Pacific Ocean, well to the south of the capital, Tarawa. It is a low island, a narrow strip of palm-covered land only just above the sea, with a small population living a traditional life of fishing, gathering and growing coconuts and pandanus. Nikunau is one of the more remote and rarely visited islands of Kiribati, with no resorts or real tourism, known for its strong traditional culture, meeting houses and close-knit villages. The appeal is its remoteness, authentic island life and unspoiled reef rather than any developed attractions. Nikunau is reached only with difficulty, by infrequent small aircraft and by inter-island boat from Tarawa, so a visit needs time and planning. The climate is tropical, hot and humid year-round, and the atoll is very low-lying and vulnerable to the sea.
