Nan is a quiet province and town in the far north of Thailand, tucked into a river valley among forested mountains near the border with Laos, well off the main tourist trail. It is known for its rich Lanna and Tai Lue culture and its temples, above all Wat Phumin, famous for its 19th-century murals including the celebrated Whispering Lovers, and the hilltop Wat Phra That Chae Haeng. The surrounding province offers dramatic mountain scenery, including Doi Phu Kha National Park and the remote salt-producing village of Bo Kluea. Nan has a relaxed, traditional atmosphere and is popular with Thai visitors seeking cool hills and heritage. The town is reached by domestic flights from Bangkok to Nan's small airport, or by long road journeys through the northern mountains. The cool season from November to February is the most pleasant time to visit.
