MYP is the airport code for Mary, a city in southeastern Turkmenistan set in the Murghab River oasis, and the gateway to the ancient city of Merv. Merv, about 30 kilometres east near Bayramali, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the oldest and best-preserved oasis cities on the Silk Road, its vast ruins spanning some 4,000 years of history and once ranking among the greatest cities of the medieval world. Mary itself is a modern regional centre in a cotton-growing area, with a museum notable for its Silk Road and archaeological collections. The city is reached by domestic flights from the capital Ashgabat to Mary Airport, and by road and rail across the country. The climate is sharply continental, with very hot summers and cold winters, so spring and autumn are the most comfortable times to explore the ruins.
