Ashgabat is the capital and largest city of Turkmenistan, in Central Asia, set on a plain between the vast Karakum desert to the north and the Kopet Dag mountains to the south, close to the border with Iran. It is one of the world's most unusual capital cities, famous for being built almost entirely of gleaming white marble: rebuilt after a devastating earthquake in 1948, and then transformed again in recent decades into a monumental city of grand white-marble buildings, golden domes, broad avenues, fountains and monuments, holding Guinness world records for its density of white-marble architecture. A city of around a million people, Ashgabat is the political and cultural heart of Turkmenistan, in a striking desert-and-mountain setting. It is reached by flights into its international airport and by road and rail. The climate is harsh and dry, with very hot summers and cool winters.
