Mount Etjo is a flat-topped sandstone mountain in central Namibia, giving its name to the surrounding Okonjati Game Reserve, a large private wildlife reserve of some 36,000 hectares near the town of Kalkfeld, about 220 kilometres northwest of Windhoek. Established in 1975 as one of Namibia's first private reserves, it protects a wide range of African wildlife, from around twenty species of antelope to elephant, lion, cheetah and both black and white rhino. The area is also famous for fossilized dinosaur footprints preserved in the local Etjo sandstone, first documented in the 1920s, which can be visited. Mount Etjo holds a place in history too, as the site where the 1989 declaration that helped pave the way to Namibian independence was signed. The reserve is reached by road from Windhoek and the main routes north. The climate is warm and dry, with summer rains.
