Mandeville is a town in the cool green hills of south-central Jamaica, the capital of Manchester parish, set on an inland plateau at over 600 metres above sea level. It is the only parish capital in Jamaica that stands neither on the coast nor on a major river, and this height gives it a mild, fresh climate that is a welcome change from the heat of the coastal resorts, with warm days and pleasantly cool nights. Mandeville is one of the most attractive and best-kept towns in the country, a genteel place of old houses, gardens and churches, popular with those seeking a quieter, cooler life. Nearby lie historic estates such as Marshall's Pen and the rugged limestone hills of the Cockpit Country. Mandeville is reached by road from Kingston, about a hundred kilometres east, and from the north-coast resorts. The climate is mild and spring-like for much of the year, cooler than the coast.
