Makin is a small coral atoll in the Pacific Ocean, the northernmost of the Gilbert Islands, in the island nation of Kiribati, lying close to the larger atoll of Butaritari. It is a low, narrow ring of reef and islets, only a few metres above the sea, with a couple of the islets inhabited, surrounded by the vast blue of the central Pacific, almost on the equator. Life on Makin is quiet and traditional, based on fishing and on the coconut and its copra, together with taro and, famously, the bananas for which Makin and its neighbour are known across Kiribati. It is a remote, unspoilt place, far from the modern world. Makin is reached by small aircraft on flights from the Kiribati capital, Tarawa, and by boat. The climate is hot and humid all year, tropical, cooled by the ocean trade winds, with the risk of long dry spells.
