Kagua is a small town in the Southern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea, in the rugged, densely populated highlands in the centre of the country. It is a district centre set among steep ridges, valleys and gardens, in a green mountain landscape of the Highlands region, home to traditional communities with their own languages and customs. Kagua is a local market and administrative town rather than a tourist destination, of interest mainly for its highland setting and cultures rather than any developed attractions. It is reached by rough mountain roads through the Highlands, linking it to larger centres such as Mendi and Mount Hagen, and by a nearby airstrip. Travel here needs time, local arrangements and current advice on road and security conditions. The climate is cool and often wet, typical of the New Guinea highlands, with heavy rainfall.
