Erave is a small settlement in the Southern Highlands region of Papua New Guinea, in the rugged interior of the country, in the district of the same name south of the main highland centres. It lies in remote, forested hill country on the fringes of the highlands, descending toward the lowlands, a local centre for scattered villages rather than a town of any size. This is not a tourist destination and has minimal services, of interest mainly for its remote setting and the traditional cultures of the region rather than any developed attractions. Erave is reached chiefly by light aircraft to a grass airstrip, weather permitting, and by rough roads and tracks through difficult country, so any journey here needs local arrangements and time. The climate is warm and wet, with heavy rainfall through much of the year, typical of the interior of Papua New Guinea.
