Jumla is a remote highland town in the far west of Nepal, the headquarters of the Jumla district in Karnali province, set in a high mountain valley at around 2,500 metres above sea level. It is best known as the main gateway to Rara Lake, the largest and one of the most beautiful lakes in Nepal, which lies in the Rara National Park a few days' trek to the north, a deep blue lake ringed by pine forests and snow peaks. Jumla is a starting point for treks into this wild and little-visited corner of the Himalaya, and is also famous for its apple orchards and its high-altitude rice fields. West of the town lies the historic Sinja valley, once the capital of the medieval Khas kingdom. Jumla is reached by flights from Nepalgunj into its airport and by long mountain roads. The climate is a cool highland one, with mild summers and cold, snowy winters.
