Khujirt is a small town in Ovorkhangai Province in central Mongolia, long known as a spa destination for its natural hot springs, set in the rolling steppe of the historic Orkhon region. Its real significance for travellers is as a base near some of Mongolia's most important sites: it lies close to Kharkhorin (Karakorum), the ancient capital of the Mongol Empire founded by Genghis Khan, and the magnificent Erdene Zuu Monastery built on its ruins, the oldest surviving Buddhist monastery in Mongolia. The surrounding Orkhon Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape of grasslands, nomadic herders, the Orkhon waterfall and centuries of steppe history. Khujirt itself offers the hot springs and a taste of rural Mongolian life. It is a stop on the central-Mongolia circuit; summer (June to September) is the travel season.
