HAL is the airport code for Halali, an airstrip serving Halali Rest Camp, which lies in the heart of Etosha National Park in northern Namibia, one of Africa's great wildlife reserves. Set roughly midway between the eastern and western sides of the park, Halali is a well-known base for safaris in Etosha, famous for its floodlit waterhole where animals, including rhino, elephant and big cats, come to drink after dark. Etosha is built around a vast, shimmering salt pan, ringed by waterholes that draw huge numbers of animals in the dry season, making it superb for game viewing. Halali provides a central place to stay and explore the park. It is reached by road within Etosha, and by the long drive from Windhoek and its Hosea Kutako International Airport, or by light aircraft to the airstrip. The climate is hot and dry, with a wetter, greener summer.
