What is Opuwo known for, out in Namibia's far northwest? Opuwo is the administrative center of the Kunene region and the practical gateway to Kaokoland, one of Namibia's most remote and sparsely populated areas, best known internationally as home to many Himba communities who maintain a distinctive traditional way of life, including the ochre-tinted skin and hairstyles for which they are widely recognized. The town itself is modest, a working regional hub with basic shops, fuel and lodging rather than a curated tourist center, but its markets and surrounding communities offer a genuine, respectfully approached window into Himba culture that draws travelers heading further into Kaokoland. North of Opuwo, a long and rough dirt road leads toward Epupa Falls, a real and dramatic set of waterfalls where the Kunene River drops through a gorge along the border with Angola, framed by baobab trees and considered one of the more striking natural sights in this part of southern Africa. Reaching Epupa from Opuwo typically takes several hours by high-clearance four-wheel drive, and the road should not be attempted in an ordinary rental sedan given how remote and rough this stretch of Kaokoland becomes.
