Gondar is a historic city in the north of Ethiopia, in the highlands near Lake Tana and the Simien Mountains, famous as a former imperial capital. From the 17th century Gondar was the capital of the Ethiopian empire, and its great legacy is the Fasil Ghebbi, a royal compound of castles and palaces built by successive emperors, a remarkable ensemble that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has earned Gondar the nickname of the Camelot of Africa. The city also has the beautiful Debre Berhan Selassie church, with its famous painted ceiling of angels, and the bath of Fasilides, the centre of the colourful Timkat, or Epiphany, celebrations. Gondar is a gateway to the dramatic Simien Mountains National Park nearby. It is reached by flights into its airport and by road through the highlands. The climate is mild thanks to the altitude, with a main rainy season in the middle of the year.
