BJR is the airport code for Bahir Dar Airport, serving Bahir Dar, one of the largest and most attractive cities in Ethiopia and the capital of the Amhara region, set on the southern shore of Lake Tana. Lake Tana is the largest lake in Ethiopia and the source of the Blue Nile, and Bahir Dar is the base for exploring it, above all its ancient island monasteries, some founded six or seven centuries ago and famous for their painted churches. Just outside the city, the Blue Nile tumbles over the Blue Nile Falls, known locally as Tis Abay, the smoking water, one of the great sights of the country. Bahir Dar itself is a pleasant lakeside city of palm-lined avenues. Bahir Dar is reached by flights from Addis Ababa into its airport, a short way from the centre, and by road. The climate is mild and pleasant for much of the year, with a main rainy season in the summer months.
