Embessa is a small village in the Tufi district of Oro Province, also known as Northern Province, in the east of Papua New Guinea, in the hilly country inland from the coast. Oro Province is a land of dramatic scenery: the deep coastal fjords and coral reefs around Tufi on Cape Nelson, the famous Kokoda Track that crosses the Owen Stanley mountains, and the volcano of Mount Lamington. Embessa lies in this remote, green landscape of forest, gardens and scattered villages, far from the main towns. The provincial capital, Popondetta, lies to the northwest, and Port Moresby, the national capital, is away to the southwest. Like much of the province, the village is reached by light aircraft and by rough roads and tracks through the hills. The climate is warm, wet and tropical throughout the year.
