AGL is the airport code for Wanigela, a small airstrip and settlement on the coast of Oro Province, sometimes called Northern Province, in the east of Papua New Guinea, on Collingwood Bay. It is a remote area of coastal villages, rainforest and mangroves, backed by the mountains of the Owen Stanley Range inland, home to traditional communities known for their tapa bark-cloth and distinctive customs. This is not a tourist destination and has minimal services, of interest mainly for its remote setting and cultures rather than any developed attractions. Wanigela is reached chiefly by light aircraft to its airstrip, weather permitting, and by boat along the coast, with very limited road access, so any journey here needs local arrangements. The climate is hot, humid and tropical, with heavy rainfall for much of the year.
