Coatepeque is a town in the Quetzaltenango department of western Guatemala, on the hot, fertile Pacific slope below the western highlands. Set near the Suchiate River not far from the Mexican border, it is an important commercial and transport centre on the Pacific coastal corridor, at the heart of a productive agricultural region of coffee, sugar and tropical crops. Sometimes nicknamed the town of gardenias, it is a busy working town rather than a tourist destination, though its position makes it a natural stopping point on routes between the highland city of Quetzaltenango (Xela), the Pacific coast and the Mexican frontier. The lowland climate is hot and humid, quite different from the cool highlands nearby, with a rainy season roughly May to October; the drier months are generally more comfortable for travel through the region.
