Huehuetenango is a city in the western highlands of Guatemala, the capital of the department of the same name, set at the foot of the Cuchumatanes - the highest non-volcanic mountain range in Central America. A busy highland city near the Mexican border, it is the commercial and transport hub for a rugged region of high peaks, remote Mam Maya villages, and some of Guatemala's finest coffee. Just outside the city lie the ruins of Zaculeu, the pre-Columbian capital of the Mam kingdom, while the road up into the Cuchumatanes leads to dramatic high-altitude plateaus and traditional towns such as Todos Santos Cuchumatan, famous for its colourful dress and its raucous horse race on All Saints Day. Huehuetenango is a gateway to one of the most culturally rich and scenic corners of the Guatemalan highlands. The dry season, roughly November to April, is the most comfortable time to visit.
