Aua Island is a small, remote coral island in the Western Islands of Manus Province, in the far north of Papua New Guinea, in the Bismarck Sea. It is one of a scattered group of tiny, isolated islands lying well out in the ocean north of the New Guinea mainland, home to a small community with its own language and traditions, living by fishing and gardening. Aua is a low, palm-covered island ringed by reef, with white beaches and clear water, but it is extremely remote, with no resorts, services or tourism to speak of. Its interest lies in its isolation and traditional island life rather than any developed attractions. Aua Island is reached only with difficulty, by boat over long distances and occasional light aircraft, so any visit needs careful arrangement. The climate is hot, humid and tropical, with a wetter season and a risk of storms.
