ASA is the airport code for Assab, a port city on the Red Sea coast in the far south of Eritrea, in the Horn of Africa, near the strait at the mouth of the Red Sea and the border with Djibouti. Assab is a hot, low-lying coastal city, historically an important port serving Eritrea and, in the past, landlocked Ethiopia, on the busy shipping lanes toward the Suez Canal. It sits in an arid, volcanic region of the Danakil, one of the hottest and most inhospitable areas on earth, of coast, salt and desert. Assab is a working port town rather than a tourist destination, of strategic and commercial importance on the Red Sea. It is reached by flights into its airport, from the Eritrean capital Asmara and elsewhere, and by the long desert road down the coast. The climate is extremely hot and dry, with high coastal humidity.
