ASM is the airport code for Asmara International Airport, serving Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, in the Horn of Africa. Set high on a plateau at around 2,300 metres, Asmara enjoys a mild, spring-like climate and is one of Africa's most distinctive capitals, famous for its remarkable architecture. Built up largely under Italian rule in the early 20th century, the city is a showcase of modernist and Art Deco design, with cinemas, cafes, service stations and villas in styles from the 1920s and 30s, so well preserved that the whole city centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Asmara is a calm, walkable city with a strong cafe culture, a legacy of the Italian era. It is reached by flights into its airport, and by the dramatic mountain road and historic railway down to the Red Sea coast. The climate is mild year-round, with a rainy season in the middle of the year.
