Arorae is a small, remote coral atoll in the far south of the Gilbert Islands of Kiribati, in the central Pacific Ocean, the southernmost of the Gilbert group. It is a low island, a narrow strip of palm-covered land only just above the sea, with a small population living traditionally by fishing, and growing coconuts and pandanus. Arorae is one of the more isolated and rarely visited islands of Kiribati, with no resorts or real tourism, known for its strong traditional culture and for a set of ancient standing stones said to be used as navigation markers pointing toward other islands. The appeal is its remoteness, authentic island life and unspoiled reef and lagoon. Arorae is reached only with difficulty, by infrequent small aircraft and by inter-island boat from Tarawa, so a visit needs planning. The climate is tropical, hot and humid year-round, and the atoll is very low-lying.
