AMF is the airport code for the airstrip at Ama, a remote settlement on a tributary of the upper Sepik River, in the East Sepik Province of Papua New Guinea. It lies deep in one of the most isolated parts of the country, a vast lowland of rivers, swamps, jungle and small mountains in the great Sepik basin, a region famous for its powerful traditional cultures and art. Ama is home to a small community living largely from the forests, rivers and swamps around them, in a place with almost none of the trappings of modern life, reached only with difficulty. The wider Sepik is one of the world's great river regions, known for its carving, its spirit houses and its riverside villages. Ama is reached by small aircraft to its airstrip or by long journeys by dugout canoe along the rivers. The climate is hot, humid and extremely wet, with very high rainfall.
