Alula, known in Somali as Caluula, is an ancient coastal town at the very tip of the Horn of Africa, in the Bari region of Puntland, in the northeast of Somalia. It stands near Cape Guardafui, the great cape that marks the northeastern point of the African continent, where the Gulf of Aden meets the ocean. Alula is a very old town, mentioned by traders almost two thousand years ago, and was once an important centre on the ancient trade routes of the Indian Ocean coast. Today it is a small fishing town on a dramatic, remote coast of cliffs and sea. However, Somalia has experienced long conflict and instability; governments generally advise against travel, so it is essential to rely on current official advice. Alula is reached by its small airport and by long coastal roads. The climate is hot and very dry, cooled a little by the sea.
