Option 1: Private airport transfer (recommended)
A pre-booked private transfer is the fastest and most comfortable way to reach Negril. Your driver meets you at MBJ arrivals with a name board, loads your luggage, and drives directly to your hotel. No stops, no other passengers. The journey takes 1 hour 35 minutes via the A1 coastal highway. Vehicles include Starlink satellite WiFi, air conditioning, and cold water. Prices start from $275 for the vehicle (not per person). Flight tracking is included β if your flight is delayed, your driver adjusts automatically.
Option 2: Shared shuttle
Shared shuttles from MBJ to Negril cost $25-45 per person but make multiple stops at hotels along the route. Expect 2.5-3 hours of travel time. You will share the vehicle with 8-15 other passengers. Shuttles depart on a schedule, so you may wait 30-60 minutes after landing for the next departure. Air conditioning quality varies.
Option 3: Route taxi
Licensed route taxis run from Montego Bay to Negril for approximately $15-20 per person. These are shared taxis that depart when full (4-5 passengers). You will need to get from the airport to the taxi stand in Montego Bay first, which is a separate fare. The vehicles are basic, often without reliable air conditioning, and luggage space is limited. Not recommended for visitors with significant luggage or families with children.
Option 4: Rental car
Car rental agencies operate at MBJ. The drive to Negril is 82km via the A1. Be aware: Jamaica drives on the left, road signage is minimal outside main highways, and the final stretch through Negril can be congested. Many visitors find the driving style intimidating. Rental costs $50-100/day plus fuel, insurance, and parking fees at your resort.
The drive: what to expect
The MBJ-to-Negril route follows the A1 coastal highway westward through Hopewell and Green Island before reaching Negril. The road is mostly two-lane with some overtaking sections. Highlights along the way include views of the Caribbean Sea, the fishing village of Lucea, and the Negril Hills. The last 20 minutes into Negril can be slow due to local traffic, especially on weekends and holidays.
When to book
Book your transfer at least 48 hours before arrival for guaranteed availability. Peak season (December through April) and holiday weekends see high demand. Most transfer providers offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before pickup. If you are arriving on a late-night flight, confirm that your provider offers 24/7 pickups β Aurum Transfers operates around the clock.
