Yerevan is the capital and largest city of Armenia, in the South Caucasus, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, founded as the fortress of Erebuni in 782 BC. It sits on a high plateau on the Hrazdan river, and on clear days enjoys spectacular views of Mount Ararat, the snow-capped biblical peak across the border in Turkey and a national symbol of Armenia. The city was largely rebuilt in the twentieth century in pink and orange volcanic tuff, giving it the nickname the Pink City, around the grand Republic Square. Landmarks include the sweeping Cascade complex of stairways and galleries, the Matenadaran museum of ancient manuscripts, and a lively cafe culture. Yerevan is a base for exploring Armenia's ancient monasteries and countryside. It is reached by its international airport and by road. The climate is continental, with hot summers and cold winters.
