Wasua is a small, remote village in the Western Province of Papua New Guinea, in the low-lying delta country near the mouth of the Fly River, in the far south, near the Torres Strait and the Indonesian border. This is one of the most isolated and least-developed parts of Papua New Guinea, a flat landscape of rivers, swamps, mangroves and rainforest, home to traditional communities who live by fishing, gardening and hunting. It is not a tourist destination and has essentially no visitor facilities. The wider region is known for its vast wetlands and wildlife and for the distinctive cultures of the Fly River peoples. Wasua is reached only with difficulty, by small boat along the rivers and coast or by light aircraft to regional airstrips, and any travel here needs local arrangements. The climate is hot, humid and tropical, with very heavy rainfall and a pronounced wet season.
