Set along a sweeping crescent bay of turquoise shallows and traditional dhows, it pairs relaxed coastal living with genuinely world-class water experiences.

Getting to and around Vilanculos
## Getting to Vilanculos
Vilanculos is one of the easiest places in Mozambique to reach: its own airport takes daily flights from Johannesburg in about two hours, plus services from Maputo in about an hour and from Kruger Mpumalanga. Transfers from the airport to the town's lodges take only a few minutes. From Vilanculos, the Bazaruto islands are a 30 to 60-minute boat ride away, or a scenic 10 to 15-minute helicopter hop.
Things to see & do in Vilanculos
## Things to do
The signature experience is a traditional dhow cruise across the archipelago's shifting turquoise channels to Benguerra, Magaruque, or Bazaruto Island for snorkelling, beach picnics, and dune scenery. Two Mile Reef offers superb snorkelling and diving over coral gardens, with the marine park home to more than two thousand fish species, plus dugongs, turtles, and dolphins. Between roughly October and April, whale sharks pass through and can be swum with. Back on the mainland, the bay suits paddleboarding and kitesurfing, and the endless beach walks cost nothing at all.

Practical info & when to visit
The dry season from May to October brings sunny days and calm seas, ideal for diving and island trips, while the warmer November to March period is lush and greener, with the best whale-shark sightings. Book island transfers and popular lodges ahead in the dry-season peak. Vilanculos works equally well as a barefoot beach week or as the launch point for a Bazaruto island stay, and many travellers combine a South African safari with a few days here on the coast.
