Vava'u is a group of islands in the north of the Kingdom of Tonga, in the South Pacific, one of the country's most beautiful and popular areas. Centred on the main island and its town of Neiafu, set on the sheltered, fjord-like Port of Refuge harbour, Vava'u is a maze of islands, channels and coral reefs that makes it one of the world's great sailing and yachting destinations. Its most famous draw is the chance to swim with humpback whales, which migrate here to breed and calve between roughly July and October, making Vava'u one of the few places in the world where such encounters are allowed. Beyond the whales, there is excellent diving and snorkelling, sea caves such as Mariner's Cave, quiet beaches and island villages. Vava'u is reached by air from Tonga's main island, Tongatapu, and by ferry. The climate is tropical, warm year-round, with a wetter season around the start of the year.
