Vanua Balavu is a remote island in the northern Lau group of Fiji, in the far east of the archipelago, a long way from the main tourist centres. It is a long, irregular island of volcanic and limestone terrain, ringed by reefs and best known for the spectacular Bay of Islands, or Qilaqila, at its northern end, a maze of mushroom-shaped limestone islets rising from clear turquoise water, a favourite yacht anchorage. Life here is traditional and village-based, and the Lau islands as a whole are known for their strong customs and fine mat and tapa craftsmanship, reflecting long ties with neighbouring Tonga. This is an off-the-beaten-track destination reached with effort, by small aircraft to the island's airstrip or by boat, and visiting villages calls for the customary sevusevu, a respectful gift of kava. The climate is tropical, warm year-round, with a wetter and a drier season.
