Uralsk, known in Kazakh as Oral, is a historic city in Kazakhstan's far northwest with a claim few travellers expect: it is the only Kazakh city that lies entirely within Europe, sitting west of the Ural River near the Russian border. Its airport, Oral Ak Zhol, is the region's gateway, and the city rewards a curious stopover.

## Getting to Uralsk

Oral Ak Zhol Airport sits about fifteen kilometres from the city centre, with flights from Kazakhstan's major cities and some international connections. Trains also link Uralsk with Almaty, Astana, and Atyrau, and buses and shared taxis serve nearby regions. In town, an extensive network of buses and marshrutka minibuses covers most districts, and daily costs are modest, roughly fifteen to thirty US dollars for budget travellers.

## What to see

Uralsk wears its layered history openly. The West Kazakhstan Regional Museum covers the city's Cossack past, Kazakh steppe culture, and Soviet period, one of nearly twenty museums, many along the main avenue. The Cathedral of the Archangel Michael, founded in 1741, is the oldest Orthodox church in Kazakhstan, while the Red Mosque of 1871 is the city's oldest functioning mosque. The old town's timber-house quarter offers wanderable streets of nineteenth-century facades, and the Green Bazaar sells fresh bread, local cheeses, and smoked fish from the Ural River. Riverside parks round out an unhurried visit.

## When to go and tips

April to October is the comfortable window, avoiding the fierce steppe winter. Uralsk is a provincial capital rather than a showcase city: come for Tsar-era facades, Cossack history, and the novelty of standing in Kazakhstan's only fully European city, not for big-ticket sights. It pairs naturally with an overland Kazakh itinerary or a border-region rail journey, and a day or two covers the highlights at a relaxed pace. For rail enthusiasts, the border-crossing services and steppe scenery around the city add a distinctive northern-Kazakh flavour to the journey itself.
