Uliastai is a town in the west of Mongolia, the capital of Zavkhan Province, in the mountainous country of the Mongolian west, between the Khangai and Altai ranges. It is one of the older towns of Mongolia, historically a Manchu garrison and administrative centre, set in a valley among hills and rivers, in a landscape of mountains, forest and the great open steppe. Uliastai is a quiet provincial centre and a base for the remote, scenic western aimag, or province, of Zavkhan, known for its mountains, lakes, sand dunes and nomadic herding culture, rather than a developed tourist destination. It lies far from the capital, Ulaanbaatar, across long distances of steppe and mountain. Uliastai is reached by domestic flights to its airport and by long roads across Mongolia. The climate is sharply continental, with warm summers and very cold winters.
