Ujae is a remote coral atoll in the Ralik, or sunset, chain of the Marshall Islands, in the central Pacific Ocean, to the west of the capital, Majuro. Like other Marshallese atolls, it is a ring of low, palm-covered coral islets around a lagoon, barely above the sea, home to a small community living traditionally by fishing and growing coconuts and other crops. Ujae is quiet, isolated and rarely visited, with no resorts or tourism, known for its strong traditional culture, its skills in traditional navigation and canoe-building, and its unspoiled reef and lagoon. It is a place of interest for its remoteness and authentic island life rather than any developed attractions. Ujae is reached by infrequent small aircraft and by boat from Majuro, so a visit needs planning. The climate is tropical, warm year-round, and the atoll is very low-lying and vulnerable to the sea.
