Tulagi is a small island in the Solomon Islands, in the South Pacific, in the Central province, lying just off the larger Florida Islands, now called the Nggela Islands, a little to the north of Guadalcanal. Though small, it has a big history: from the end of the nineteenth century until the Second World War it was the capital of the British Solomon Islands, chosen for its sheltered harbour, and today it is the capital of the Central province. During the war Tulagi was occupied by Japanese forces and then taken by United States Marines in a fierce battle in August 1942, at the start of the Guadalcanal campaign. The waters around the island, part of the famous Ironbottom Sound, are dotted with wartime wrecks and are a noted place for scuba diving. Tulagi is reached by boat across the sea from Honiara, on Guadalcanal. The climate is hot, humid and tropical all year.
