Treinta y Tres is a town in the east of Uruguay, the capital of the department of the same name, in a region of gently rolling countryside, rivers and ranch land. Its unusual name, meaning Thirty-Three, honours the Thirty-Three Orientals, a group of patriots who launched the movement for Uruguay's independence in the 1820s. The town sits on the Olimar river, and the surrounding area is known for its natural beauty, including the nearby Quebrada de los Cuervos, a dramatic ravine and protected area of hills and forest that is one of eastern Uruguay's scenic highlights. It is a quiet, traditional interior town, a centre for the cattle-ranching countryside around it. Treinta y Tres is reached by road from Montevideo and other cities, on the routes toward the Brazilian border. The climate is temperate, with warm summers and mild winters.
