Tocoa is a town in the department of Colon in northern Honduras, in the lower valley of the Aguan River, inland from the Caribbean coast. It is a working agricultural and commercial centre for the region, at the heart of a fertile farming area known for African oil palm, plantains, citrus and cattle, rather than a tourist resort. Tocoa serves as a market and transport hub for the surrounding countryside and for communities across the Aguan valley. The wider department of Colon stretches to the Caribbean, where the coastal town of Trujillo and areas of tropical forest lie within reach. For most travelers Tocoa is a stop or a gateway on the way through northeastern Honduras rather than a destination in itself. It is reached by road along the valley from cities such as La Ceiba and Trujillo. The climate is hot and humid, with a pronounced wet season.
