Tobruk is a port city on the eastern Mediterranean coast of Libya, in North Africa, not far from the border with Egypt. It is set around one of the finest natural deep-water harbours on the North African coast, which has shaped its history for centuries, from an ancient Greek colony and Roman frontier fortress to a modern oil-exporting port. Tobruk is best known around the world for its role in the Second World War, when it endured a long and famous siege in 1941, and it remains a place of war cemeteries and desert battlefields. Today it is chiefly an oil port and regional town. However, Libya has experienced serious conflict and instability in recent years; governments generally advise against travel, so it is essential to rely on current official advice. Tobruk is reached by road along the coast and by its airport. The climate is warm and dry, with a mild, wetter winter.
