TMI is the airport code for Tumlingtar Airport, serving Tumlingtar, a small town in the far east of Nepal, in the Sankhuwasabha district, set on a broad, high plateau between the Arun and Sabha rivers in the foothills of the eastern Himalaya. It is best known as the main gateway for trekkers heading into the wild Makalu-Barun region, toward Makalu, the fifth-highest mountain in the world, some fifty kilometres to the north. Tumlingtar sits on one of the largest flat-topped plateaus in Nepal, in a landscape of deep valleys, terraced hills and forest. It is a modest hill town, above all a starting point for adventures into a remote and spectacular part of the Himalaya. Tumlingtar is reached by short flights from Kathmandu, about thirty-five minutes away, and by long mountain roads. The climate is mild in the valley, cooler up in the mountains.
