Tete is Mozambique's Zambezi crossroads - a hot, low-lying river city (about 140 metres above sea level, one of the country's warmest) that grew where the great river narrows enough to cross. The Portuguese-built Samora Machel suspension bridge, opened in 1973, gave the Zambezi its first permanent road crossing here and still carries the corridor that links southern Mozambique with Malawi and Zambia, making Tete the transit hub of the interior. The modern city runs on mining money and river trade, and its signature excursion lies northwest: Cahora Bassa, Africa's second-largest hydroelectric dam, holding back a vast lake famed for tigerfish sport-fishing and big-sky boat days. Time any visit for the cooler, dry months from May to August - October heat in Tete is legendary - and treat the riverfront sunset, bridge in silhouette, as the city's daily show.
