Taluqan is a city in the northeast of Afghanistan, the capital of Takhar Province, set in a fertile plain among the foothills of the mountains near the border regions of Central Asia. It is a market town and regional centre in an agricultural area known for its farmland and, historically, its trade, in a landscape of plains, rivers and mountains in a remote and long-troubled part of the country. However, Afghanistan as a whole is considered extremely dangerous for travelers, with severe security risks; governments strongly advise against all travel, and there is no tourist infrastructure. It is essential to rely on current official advice, which is likely to warn against any travel. Taluqan is reached by road across the north of Afghanistan and by a local airfield, though access is difficult and unsafe. The climate is continental, with hot summers and cold winters.
