Sukkur is a city in the province of Sindh in southern Pakistan, on the west bank of the mighty Indus River, and one of the largest cities in the province. It is best known for the Sukkur Barrage, a huge British-era irrigation dam completed in 1932 that feeds one of the largest canal systems in the world and turns the surrounding countryside green. The river here is crossed by the historic Lansdowne Bridge and the newer Ayub Bridge, a striking pair of Victorian and modern engineering, while on a midstream island stands the Hindu temple of Sadhu Bela, reached by boat. Sukkur is a hot, busy commercial and transport hub for northern Sindh, close to the ancient town of Rohri across the river. It is reached by its domestic airport, by the main railway line up the Indus valley and by the national highway. The climate is very hot in summer and mild in winter.
