St John is the smallest and greenest of the three main US Virgin Islands, in the Caribbean, famous above all for its beautiful beaches and for the Virgin Islands National Park, which covers around two thirds of the island. St John has no airport of its own: visitors fly into Cyril E. King Airport on the neighbouring island of St Thomas, then travel on by ferry to St John. From the ferry dock at Cruz Bay, the island's main town, the protected beaches and reefs are close at hand, including the famous Trunk Bay with its underwater snorkelling trail, and quieter bays backed by forested hills. St John is a place for beaches, hiking and snorkelling rather than nightlife. To reach it, fly to St Thomas and take a short ferry from Red Hook or Charlotte Amalie to Cruz Bay. The climate is warm and tropical, cooled by the trade winds, with a wetter late-summer and autumn.
