SPR is the airport code for San Pedro, the main town on Ambergris Caye, the largest island of Belize, off its Caribbean coast. San Pedro is a lively, laid-back beach town and the country's most popular holiday destination, strung along sandy streets where golf carts outnumber cars. Its great draw is the sea: Ambergris Caye lies just inside the Belize Barrier Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, giving superb diving and snorkelling, including the Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley, and access to the famous Great Blue Hole further out. Beyond the water, the town offers beach bars, restaurants and a relaxed Caribbean atmosphere. San Pedro is reached by short domestic flights to its airstrip from Belize City, or by water taxi. The climate is tropical, warmest and driest in the winter and spring, with a hurricane season later in the year.
