SKP is the code for Skopje International Airport, the main airport of North Macedonia, serving the country's capital, Skopje. From 2006 to 2018 it was named Alexander the Great Airport, and that name is still widely used. The airport lies near the village of Petrovec, about twenty kilometres east of the city, and is the largest and busiest in the country. Skopje itself is a lively capital set on the Vardar river, ringed by mountains in the north of the country. It is an ancient city with layers of history: a great stone bridge over the river, the old Ottoman bazaar, one of the largest in the Balkans, the hilltop Kale fortress, and many statues and monuments from a recent rebuilding of the centre. It is also the birthplace of Mother Teresa. Skopje is reached by air into this airport, and by road and rail through the Balkans. The climate is continental, with hot summers and cold winters.
